Chopper Project 4 - last updated April 2, 2006

model PROJECT 4 (June 2002)
Santee Type Wiring Box

This is the cardboard "mock up" that I sent to the metal shop. I modeled it after the same specs as the original Santee wring box on my Honda Chopper (project number 2). This ended up being a mistake. The angled part that goes under the carbs measured 2 inches on the original Santee. This is too tall for the wiring box lid to go on/off without removing the carbs. I had to send it back to the shop and have it cut down a half inch.

DIMENSIONS

Heavy gauge stainless steel added about $50 to the cost. Its very shiny (its covered with finger prints in the photos). In retrospect I should have gone with lighter gauge metal and had it plated or coated. It was "a bear" to drill through the heavy gauge stainless steel.

You are suppose to swap the solenoid around and use the bracket from a stock CB750. The stock bracket wouldn't work with my dimensions so I made my own bracket (shown before and after the solenoid, rectifier, and regulator are attached).

HOME MADE vs STOCK BRACKET

guts The Guts
I mounted all the "guts" on a piece of cardboard, hooked up the battery, a temporary ground, and started the bike before I put the "guts" in the wiring box.

I had a hard time finding a cool looking ignition switch. I found a Harley one on EBAY. The push button starter switch and toggle switch for the lights were easy to find at the local auto parts house.

It works and I can get in and out of it without removing the carbs. Yea!
